Frequently Asked Questions

Where can the TEFA funds be used?
TEFA funds can be used at accredited schools for eligible programs from Pre-kindergarten till 12th grade.
How much funding does TEFA provide?
For the 2026–2027 school year, each eligible student may receive approximately $11,000 to $12,000 through a TEFA Education Savings Account (ESA). The exact award amount is determined annually by the Texas Comptroller and may change each year. Funds are deposited into the family’s ESA and can be used for eligible educational expenses, including tuition, fees, textbooks, curriculum materials, and other approved costs.
What are the important dates for TEFA?
Families can apply for a TEFA Education Savings Account beginning in January 2026 for the 2026–2027 school year. The application deadline is expected to be around March 1, 2026, with applications submitted through the Texas Comptroller’s office. Available funds are awarded through a needs-based lottery across four priority tiers until the program’s $1 billion annual funding has been fully allocated.
What documents are required to apply?
Proof of residency, age verification, and enrollment confirmation.
Who is eligible for TEFA?
TEFA is available to eligible K–12 students in Texas. If demand exceeds available funding, awards are distributed through a needs-based lottery using four priority tiers: (1) students in foster care or with disabilities, (2) students from low-income households, (3) students from moderate-income households, and (4) all other eligible students, subject to remaining funds. Once awarded a TEFA Education Savings Account, students generally do not need to reapply each year, provided they remain eligible and continue attending an accredited private school.
How do I apply for TEFA?
Apply through the official TEFA portal when applications open.
